Meet the Artist
George Baker was born in Portland and raised in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a BA in Political Science. After a tour in the Peace Corps in Colombia, he attended and received a MA Degree in Political Science from the University of Tennessee. He then spent the next 27 years in Federal Service in both domestic and international assignments. He has two grown children; a son who is an artist in the video gaming industry, and a daughter who is an architect. George lives in Georgetown, Maine and Burke, Virginia.
I have been a painter, in oils, for over 45 years. I was inspired by my father, a recreational painter, who continued to paint until the age of 95. The artist Winslow Homer was another early inspiration. Composition and color are the two important ingredients in my art. Landscapes and seascapes have been favorite subjects, from such diverse places as Paris, the Amazon River, Iraq, Monhegan Island, and coastal areas near my Georgetown, Maine residence. I have studied under Frank Bruckmann and Alison Hill, noted Monhegan Island painters. I also also collect and restore antique frames, which I often carefully match with my paintings. "Whether he studies the harbor, a distant island or a flower in his garden, George understands scale, color and composition and delivers a brilliant feast for our eyes."(Georgetown Tide, December 2016-January 2017)
